Comparative analysis of architectural educational standards is provided in the United States and Russia with an emphasis on the importance of balancing profit-making and public interest in this professional field. The conclusion is made that it is important to incorporate the ethical end-goals of the architectural profession directly into the training of students in architecture. This paper attempts to draw a general overview of the basic characteristics of the architectural education systems in the American and Canadian universities and to record recent and future developmental trends in these systems as applied now and as suggested by interviewed university officials or as indicated in catalogs and literature. The paper deals with the subject by studying its major parts: administrative and academic independency of architectural institutions, names of architectural colleges, disciplines and departments in architectural colleges, degrees offered in various architectural disciplines, required time to obtain architectural degrees, academic and study systems, minimum course work required to get degrees in architecture, ratios of students to faculty members, conditions for professional practice, objectives of the architectural education process, and philosophies of the design, planning or problem-solving process. This paper explores architectural education within North America, Europe, and, briefly, in primarily former British colonies originally involved with the RIBA and now the Commonwealth Association of Architects , while investigating contemporary calls for a restructuring of existing curricula in response to current unemployment statistics and perceived poor employment experience in the field of conventional commercial architecture for our youth.
